TSA PreCheck still lets you pick Male, Female, or "Another Gender" when you enroll, regardless of what your ID says, and TSA accepts state IDs with an X marker at checkpoints. Global Entry, run by Customs and Border Protection, uses your passport's sex marker and currently cannot show a changed marker or X.

How it works

Airport screening: Your ID does not need to match your gender presentation, and a mismatch between the marker on your boarding pass and your ID is not a problem. TSA's body scanners are no longer gender-based, and you can always ask for a private screening or a same-gender officer.

TSA PreCheck: enrollment asks for gender and offers Male, Female, or Another Gender; your choice does not need to match your documents.

Global Entry / NEXUS / SENTRI: these CBP programs pull the sex marker from your passport. Under the January 2025 executive order the marker is frozen to sex at birth even if your passport was previously corrected.

Name changes: update your PreCheck or Global Entry profile online after your passport or ID is updated; there is no fee for the update.

Steps

  1. TSA PreCheck enrollment[1][2]

Enroll online, choose the gender option you prefer, and finish at an enrollment center with your ID. The name must match the name on the ID you fly with.

  2. Update your name after a legal name change[1][2]

Log in to your Trusted Traveler Programs account (Global Entry) or contact TSA (PreCheck) to update the name once your passport or ID reflects it, so your Known Traveler Number keeps working on reservations in the new name.
