Passports, Social Security, and immigration documents are federal and work the same in every state. Their rules changed sharply in 2025 and are still in court.

Your name and your gender marker follow different rules. Every federal agency still updates names after a legal name change. Changing the sex or gender marker is blocked or limited right now on all of them.
