How it works
Since January 2020, the Connecticut DMV has used a one-page self-attestation form, B-385 (Gender Designation on a License or Identification Card). You check Female (F), Male (M), or Non-Binary (X) and sign under penalty of false statement. DMV staff are told not to ask for more gender-related information or about your medical history.
You surrender your current card, get a new photo, and pay the fee for an updated card. You can change your name at the same visit, but that needs a court order or other legal name document and your Social Security record must already show the new name.
Steps
If you are changing your name, update Social Security first[2]
The DMV checks your name against Social Security. Update your name with SSA using your court order, then wait up to 48 hours before your DMV visit. Skip this step if you are only changing your gender marker.
Print and complete B-385, choosing F, M, or X. For a name change, also complete E-78 and bring your original certified court order (Probate or Superior Court, or an order from another state). Photocopies are not accepted.
Make a DMV appointment[2]
Name updates are done by appointment only at DMV hub offices or DMV express offices (including some AAA and credit union locations, which may add up to an $8 convenience fee). Walk-ins are not available at every office and never on Saturdays.
Bring the forms, your current license or ID, and payment. The DMV takes your old card, gives you a temporary paper card, and takes a new photo. Your new card is mailed to the address on file.

Your Connecticut license is often the easiest document to update and a good first step for daily life. The DMV notes that other agencies may not accept a marker that differs from your birth certificate or passport. Update your birth certificate (if born in Connecticut) with DPH. Passport and Social Security sex markers cannot currently be changed at the federal level; name changes still go through.
Tips2 tips from people who have done this
- Do the name change and gender change at the same appointment so you pay once and get one new photo.
- An X marker on a Connecticut REAL ID is issued by the state; some federal agencies and other states may not recognize it.
