How it works
Under MCL 333.2831(c), the State Registrar must create a new birth certificate showing a sex designation other than the one assigned at birth when you send the state's Sex Designation Form. The registrar may not require any other document except, if you are also changing your name, the court order. You choose male, female, or X (which covers all designations other than male and female, including intersex).
If you send your name change order at the same time, the new certificate also shows your new name, and it does not need the special wording otherwise required to leave your birth name off.
Steps
Complete the Sex Designation Form and the Application to Correct or Change a Michigan Birth Record. Include a photocopy of an unexpired government photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport, passport card, or military ID). If you are also changing your name, include a certified copy of the court order.
Mail the packet to Vital Records Changes[4]
Mail to Vital Records Changes, P.O. Box 30721, Lansing, MI 48909 (for rush service, address it to "Vital Records Changes RUSH" at the same box and include the $25 rush fee). Pay by check or money order to "State of Michigan." Originals are not returned, and prepaid return envelopes are not used.
MDHHS's changes page currently lists 8 to 10 weeks for regular processing and 6 to 8 weeks expedited, not guaranteed. The clock starts when they have every required document. One certified copy comes with the $50 fee. Check status at 517-335-8666 or MDHHS-VR-Changes@michigan.gov.

Costs and fee waivers
No fee waiver is available for this step.[4]
MDHHS does not publish a fee waiver for amendments. Funds such as Genderbands and Trans Lifeline microgrants sometimes help with document fees.

RequirementsWhere you live, age, timeline
- Where you live
- You must have been born in Michigan. Where you live now does not matter. If you were born in another state, that state's rules apply.[1][3]
- Age
- Adults 18 and older sign for themselves. For a minor, a parent or legal guardian signs; if the child is over 15, both the parent or guardian and the child sign.
- How long it takes
About 2 to 3 months from mailing, depending on MDHHS's current backlog.
MinorsA parent or legal guardian can request the change for a child under 18 using the same form; if the child is over 15, the child must sign…
After you finishUse the new certificate to update other records that accept it.
Use the new certificate to update other records that accept it. As of September 2026 the Social Security Administration and the State Department will not change the sex field on a federal record based on it. Order extra copies now; ordering later is a separate request.
Tips2 tips from people who have done this
- Choose carefully. According to the form, any later request to change the sex on your Michigan birth certificate again requires a court order.
- Doing your name change first? Check item 12 on the court petition, or send the order together with the Sex Designation Form, so your birth name does not appear on the new certificate.
