How it works

Since January 1, 2020, New Hampshire law has listed three gender options on driver's licenses and non-driver ID cards: "M" for male, "F" for female, and "X" for other (RSA 263:5 and RSA 260:21). You self-identify on the application; no medical or court documentation is required.

Changing your name on the card is a separate request that requires legal proof of the new name, such as a certified copy of your Probate Division name change order. The replacement card for a name change is free. You can do both at the same appointment.

Steps

  1. Update Social Security first if your name is changing[4]

    Optional

The DMV checks your name against Social Security records, so update your name with SSA before your DMV visit. The sex field at SSA currently cannot be changed, but that does not stop the DMV from issuing M, F, or X.

  2. Book a DMV appointment[1]

Request an appointment for a Gender Change (and, if needed, a Name Change) through the DMV's online appointment system. Name changes are not accepted by mail.

  3. Bring your documents to the appointment[1]

    • Completed DSMV 450 (Replacement, reason "gender change," with your chosen marker).
    • Your current, valid NH driver's license or non-driver ID.
    • $10 fee.
    • For a name change too: DSMV 30 and a certified copy of your name change order.

You hand in your old card, get a new photo, and leave with a 60-day temporary paper license.

How long it takes

One appointment, then the card arrives by mail (the temporary license covers up to 60 days).

Your license is the ID most places check first. If you chose X, note that the US passport and Social Security record currently cannot show X or a changed sex marker; your New Hampshire card is still valid ID. New Hampshire birth certificates cannot show X.

Tips1 tip from people who have done this
  • You do not need a name change, a court order, or a doctor's letter to change your marker. If staff ask for one, ask for a supervisor and point to RSA 263:5.
