How it works

The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) lets you self-select your gender designation. Fill out the Driver's License, Learner's Permit or ID Card Application, check "Change of Information" and "Gender," pick M, F, or X in the gender box, and bring it to an in-person appointment. The RMV has offered X since November 2019, and GLAD and MTPC confirm that no medical or other documentation is required.

You can change your name at the same visit. For a REAL ID, bring your certified court decree (or marriage or divorce document). Update your name with Social Security first so the records match.

Steps

  1. If your name is changing, update Social Security first[4][5]

Bring your certified name change decree to Social Security. The RMV checks your name against Social Security records. (The Social Security sex field currently cannot be changed; this does not stop the RMV from changing your marker.)

  2. Fill out the application and choose M, F, or X[2][5]

Check "Change of Information" and "Gender" in A4 and your marker in D1. Namesake's Massachusetts state ID guide can walk you through it.

  3. Book an RMV Service Center appointment[1]

Gender and name changes must be done in person. Book online through myRMV or call 857-368-8000 (from 339, 617, 781, 857 area codes or out of state) or 800-858-3926 (other Massachusetts area codes).

  4. Go to your appointment and pay $25[1][4][5]

Bring the completed application, your current license or ID, and, if your name is changing, your certified court decree and Social Security card in the new name. You may also be asked for proof of address (a recent bill or lease). The RMV takes a new photo and signature and gives you a temporary paper credential.

    Cost
$25 driver's license or ID amendment fee
  5. Receive the new card by mail[5]

The card is mailed to you. If it has not arrived after 30 days, contact the RMV.

    Time
    about 2 weeks

Costs and fee waivers

No fee waiver is available for this step.[1][6]

The RMV's change-of-information page lists no fee waiver for amendments. MTPC's Identity Document Assistance network can help pay ID fees.

Your Massachusetts license or Mass ID is the ID most places check, and an X-marker REAL ID is valid for domestic flights. Note that the US passport and the Social Security record currently cannot be changed to X or to a different sex marker, so your documents may not match; that is legal and expected right now.

Tips2 tips from people who have done this
  • You can change your gender marker without changing your name, and without a court order.
  • If you are only renewing or replacing your card anyway, make the change then to avoid paying twice.
