How it works

Under NAC 483.070, you change the gender on a Nevada license or ID by declaring yourself a person of the identified gender on a DMV form. No medical or court documentation is required. The Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card (DMV 002) has a SEX field where you circle M, F, or X. The DMV surrenders your old card and issues a new one (NAC 483.075).

Changing your name requires proof of the legal name change, such as a certified court order, marriage certificate, or divorce decree (NAC 483.055). You can do both at the same visit.

Steps

  1. Make a DMV appointment and print DMV 002[4]

Book an appointment online and fill in DMV 002 before you go. The DMV's online duplicate service is for replacing a card, and a gender change means surrendering your old card for a new one (NAC 483.075), so plan on going in person.

  2. Go to the office and declare your gender[1][3]

Bring your current card, the completed DMV 002, and, if your name is changing, a certified copy of your name change order. Update Social Security first so the name matches. Sign the gender declaration if one is provided. You will surrender your old card, take a new photo, and pay the change-of-information fee.

    Cost
$8.50 change of information other than address (driver's license or ID card)
  3. Receive the new card by mail[1]

You get a temporary paper document at the office. The card is mailed to you.

Costs and fee waivers

Can’t afford it? You may not have to pay.[3]

People under 25 who declare themselves homeless get full fee exemptions for original, renewal, and duplicate cards. People 25 and older who declare homelessness can get a one-time waiver for a duplicate ID. People released from prison or jail within 90 days can get a one-time duplicate waiver. It is not clear whether these waivers cover a change-of-information transaction.

Change of information other than address (driver's license or ID card)[3]$8.50The DMV lists the same $8.50 fee for licenses and ID cards. If the card is also due for renewal, renewal fees apply instead. People under 25 who declare themselves homeless can get fee exemptions (DMV 128).

After you finishYour Nevada card is valid for driving, voting, and REAL ID purposes with any marker.

Your Nevada card is valid for driving, voting, and REAL ID purposes with any marker. The US passport and Social Security record currently cannot show X or a changed sex marker, so your documents may not match. That is legal, but carry your license when traveling.

Tips2 tips from people who have done this
  • You can change your marker without changing your name, and vice versa.
  • If staff ask for a doctor's letter, cite NAC 483.070, which requires only your declaration. Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (702-386-1070) helps with gender marker changes.
