How it works
Oregon DMV offers three gender markers (shown as "sex" on the card): M (male), F (female), and X (not specified). If you are changing only the marker, you bring your current license, permit, or ID card to a DMV office, choose the marker, and pay for a replacement or renewal. No medical or court documentation is required. X is available on both standard and REAL ID cards, and DMV says it will keep issuing X unless federal direction changes.
Changing your name requires proof of the legal name change (such as a certified court judgment), and you must update Social Security first because DMV verifies your name with SSA. You can change your name and marker in the same visit.
Steps
If your name is changing, update Social Security first[3]
OptionalDMV checks your name against Social Security. For a REAL ID the names must match. For a standard card, DMV can verify under another name if you bring proof of that name. Skip this step if you are only changing the marker.
- Marker only: your current Oregon license, permit, or ID card. That is all.
- Name change too: proof of your legal name change (certified court judgment, or another document on DMV's acceptable list) plus proof of identity and address.
- REAL ID: the extra identity, Social Security, and residency documents DMV lists.
Walk in or make an appointment at DMV2U.oregon.gov. Tell the clerk you want to change your gender marker (and name, if applicable), select M, F, or X, have your photo taken, and pay the replacement or renewal fee.
Receive your new card by mail[1]
You leave with a temporary paper credential and the card is mailed to you.
Costs and fee waivers
Can’t afford it? You may not have to pay.[5]
No waiver for driver licenses. DMV may not charge for issuing or renewing an ID card, or for up to two replacements, for someone experiencing homelessness who brings a qualifying form from a nonprofit or state agency that serves people experiencing homelessness.
| What | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Driver license replacement[5] | $30 | If your card is due for renewal, you pay the renewal fee instead ($48 for a Class C license). REAL ID costs extra. |
| ID card replacement[5] | $40 | Renewal is $43. Free for people experiencing homelessness with a verification form from a service provider. REAL ID costs extra. |

DMV keeps a history of your prior names and markers and shares name, date of birth, and sex with some federal systems (National Driver Register, Selective Service) and Oregon's law-enforcement data system. Your Oregon card with X or a changed marker is valid for REAL ID and TSA screening. Social Security stopped processing sex-marker changes on January 31, 2025, and US passports currently show sex at birth, so expect mismatches between federal and state records.
Tips2 tips from people who have done this
- You do not need a court order, amended birth certificate, or doctor's letter for the marker. If someone asks, point them to DMV's "Changing Your Gender Marker" page.
- Name and marker changes are independent; you can do either one alone.
