You can update your name on a Wyoming license or ID in person with a court order. Changing the sex marker is unclear: WYDOT no longer posts its old gender-change form, and a 2025 law defines sex as sex at birth for all Wyoming laws and rules. There is no X option. Call WYDOT before you go.

How it works

Name: you must appear in person at any Wyoming driver exam office, surrender your current card, and show legal proof of the new name (a certified court order). Update Social Security first: WYDOT checks your new name and date of birth with SSA and will not issue the card if they do not match. You pay the standard renewal fee.

Sex marker: before 2025, WYDOT changed the marker on a "Gender Designation Change Request Form" signed by you and a medical or social service provider. That form is no longer on WYDOT's forms pages, and HB 32 (2025, W.S. 8-1-110) now says that whenever any Wyoming law or rule applies a person's sex, it means biological sex at birth. WYDOT has not published a current written policy. Assume a change may be refused, and call Driver Services at 307-777-4800 to ask before paying for a visit. Wyoming cards show only M or F.

Steps

  1. Update your name with Social Security first[1]

WYDOT verifies your new name and date of birth with SSA. If there is no match, you will need to bring your new Social Security card too. Wait a few days after the SSA update before going to WYDOT.

  2. If you want to change the sex marker, call WYDOT first[2][5]

    Optional

Call Driver Services at 307-777-4800 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm) and ask whether a sex-marker change is possible and what documents are accepted. Write down the date and the name of the person you spoke with. If you are refused, contact the ACLU of Wyoming.

  3. Visit a driver exam office[1][2]

Bring your current Wyoming card (you must surrender it), a certified copy of your name change order, and the completed application. You will be photographed and sign again. Pay by check, money order, or cash (cards accepted at some offices for an extra fee).

Where you live
You must hold or be applying for a Wyoming driver's license or ID card. You cannot hold both a license and an ID at the same time.[3][1]
How long it takes

One office visit, then 4 to 6 weeks for the card by mail.

After you finishYour license is the ID most places check first.

Your license is the ID most places check first. As of September 2026, the US passport and Social Security record also cannot show a changed sex marker, so for now most trans Wyomingites can update only their name across documents. Keep certified copies of your court order for banks, employers, and your county clerk (voter registration).

Tips2 tips from people who have done this
  • Wyoming law requires you to tell WYDOT within 10 days after a legal name change (W.S. 31-7-137).
  • If a marker was changed on your card before 2025, no published rule says it will be revoked, but ask WYDOT what will print at your next renewal.
